Gross National Happiness (GNH): Bhutan’s Unique Approach to Measuring National Progress
Sustainability
Bhutan’s traditions are deeply intertwined with spirituality, nature, and social harmony, making the country truly unique living with Gros National Happiness (G N H) rather than Gros Domistic Product (G D P).
Gross National Happiness (GNH) is Bhutan’s unique approach to measuring national progress, prioritizing well-being over economic wealth. Unlike conventional economic indicators like Gross Domestic Product (GDP), GNH focuses on holistic development, balancing material growth with spiritual, social, and environmental well-being.
GNH is built on four key pillars:
- Sustainable and Equitable Socioeconomic Development – Ensuring economic growth benefits everyone while preserving Bhutan’s cultural identity.
- Conservation of Environment – Bhutan is known for its commitment to environmental sustainability, maintaining forest cover above 70% and being the world’s only carbon-negative country.
- Preservation and Promotion of Culture – Maintaining Bhutanese traditions, values, and language while adapting to modernity.
- Good Governance – Effective leadership and policies that prioritize the well-being of citizens.
These pillars guide Bhutan’s policies, shaping education, healthcare, environmental protection, and community development. For example, businesses must align with GNH principles, and Bhutan restricts excessive tourism to prevent cultural erosion. GNH represents Bhutan’s belief that happiness stems from a balanced life, strong community ties, with harmony nature.
