Punakha Dzong

Punakha Dzong holds immense historical significance as the first and most important dzong built in Bhutan. Constructed in 1637–38 by Ngawang Namgyal, the 1st Zhabdrung Rinpoche, it became the seat of Bhutan’s government until the capital was moved to Thimphu in 1955.

This dzong played a pivotal role in Bhutan’s unification and defense against Tibetan invasions in the 17th century. It was also the site where Bhutan’s first king, Ugyen Wangchuck, was crowned in 1907, marking the beginning of the Wangchuck dynasty.
