PUNAKHA

Popular Places to Visit

Punakha was the first capital city of Bhutan, and it holds great historical significance as the site of the first coronation of Bhutan’s monarchy, which took place at Punakha Dzong on December 17, 1907. It also serves as the main winter residence for the central monastic body. The administrative center is stunningly situated between two rivers—the female river on the left and the male river on the right. These two rivers merge about 100 meters beyond the end of the administrative structure, creating a breathtaking natural confluence around Punakha Dzong.
