bumthang jambay lhakhang

Jambay Lhakhang is one of the oldest and most sacred temples in Bhutan, located in the Bumthang Valley near Jakar. It was built in 659 AD by Tibetan King Songtsen Gampo as part of a series of temples designed to subdue a demoness obstructing the spread of Buddhism.

The temple has undergone multiple restorations over the centuries, including significant contributions from King Sindhu Raja and King Gongsa Ugyen Wangchuck, Bhutan’s first king. It houses relics such as the Future Buddha (Jowo Jampa) and over a hundred statues of Kalachakra deities.

Jambay Lhakhang is also famous for the Jambay Lhakhang Drup festival, held annually in October or November. This vibrant event features sacred dances, including the Mewang (Fire Ritual) and the Ter Chham (Naked Dance), which are deeply rooted in Bhutanese tradition.
